Barry Johnson
The Monday Night Show

Barry Johnson Barry Johnson
Hi there. I am Barry Johnson and I co-host the Monday night show with Keith Wilkes.

I first got heavily into music around 1983/84 when I was around 16 years old. I used to spend most of my wages from my after school job (£20 a week) on vinyl and I have some real classics from the 80s.

My interest in music radio came about around 1987 when I got involved with 2 local, part-time radio stations. About this time I also started working with a local mobile DJ as his roadie and when he retired in 1989 I took over his disco (The Electric Dream Roadshow) plus his record collection which now gives me around 16,000 pieces of vinyl and a few thousand CDs.
I still spend most weekends on the road DJ'ing for weddings, birthdays, seasonal parties and the like and in 1997 & 2000 worked on the Brighton Labour conference where I was on stage with Tony Blair and his gang, (pictures www.ibs3.co.uk)

From 1989 to 1992 I worked for a Laser production company on many of the massive warehouse raves around the time the scene was moving from acid to house and trance. We used to work alongside DJs every week who are now household names such as Carl Cox, Grooverider, Fabio and Sasha - just to drop a few names! In 2004 I made a brief return to help with the lasers at Glastonbury for the Chemical Brothers.

I love living by the sea and from the age of 13 was interested in The RNLI and used to help out at the Newhaven station, (www.newhavenlifeboat.co.uk) joining the launching crew at 16 where I stayed until my late 20's. I still help out providing PA systems for the annual fete and special events.

I joined the Newhaven Branch of The National Coastwatch Institution (www.ncinewhaven.org.uk) in 2004 where I was a watchkeeper until 2007.

I joined Seahaven FM from the outset in 2008 and have co-hosted the Monday night show with Keith ever since.

In August 2008, after waiting for a vacancy for a long time, I was accepted as a trainee with HM Coastguard Search & Rescue at Newhaven, where I am still on call as a Coastal Rescue Officer (CRO).

I have a keen interest in photography and some of my pictures can be found on the Newhaven Lifeboat website.
