Patrick Easter Special

My guest this week is a prolific writer of historical crime thrillers that are based in 18th Century London....
At 19 he joined the Metropolitan Police and posted to Hammersmith where one of his first duties was to attend the scene of the murder of three fellow officers behind Wormwood Scrubs prison - a brutal introduction to his new career.
Three years later he transferred to Thames where he was introduced to a way of life completely at odds with anything he'd seen before. What he learned there – the language, the attitudes, the ethics of the men who worked the river – was to form the basis of the stories and characters in his books. Patrick moved into plain clothes detective work using Q-cars - unmarked crime cars with a crew of three concerned solely with the targeting and arrest of often violent criminals. These postings were always high octane and sometimes dangerous, particularly the high-speed vehicle pursuits.

He left the force in November 1994 and became a freelance journalist working in the Intelligent Transport Systems sector, covering developments in traffic management systems including satellite communications .
His writing career began almost by default. The journalism was high pressure work with deadlines looming on different days of the week. In the days before the internet filing stories from around the world was difficult so early in 2008 he decided to become a writer.

Following the maxim that you should write about what you know, all his books are based in and around the Port of London at the end of the 18th Century.
